Each team's starting lineup from their previous match in this tournament is listed.

Brentford

In the last round, the Londoners secured their second significant victory in the current Premier League season. On the road, they dismantled Southampton's defense with a 5-0 win. Before this, the club had gone four matches without a win in the league (1 draw and 3 losses). Thomas Frank's side is in the middle of the standings, trailing the European competition zone by 7 points.

Injury concerns for the club include defenders Ben Mee, Ethan Pinnock, Kristoffer Ajer, Rico Henry, and Aaron Hickey, midfielder Josh Dasilva, and forward Gustavo Nunes.

  • At least three goals have been scored in 6 of Brentford's last 8 Premier League games.
  • Both teams scored in 14 of Brentford's last 18 league matches.
  • At least two goals were scored in the first half in 6 of the club's last 7 home Premier League games.

Manchester City

For the first time since the end of October last year, the Mancunians have won two consecutive Premier League matches. First, the Citizens defeated Leicester 2-0 away, then thrashed West Ham 4-1 at home. Before that, they had drawn 1-1 with Everton. This unbeaten run has slightly improved their standings – Pep Guardiola's side moved up to 6th place, just two points shy of the Champions League zone.

Forward Oscar Bobb and midfielder Rodri Hernandez will miss the match due to injuries.

  • The club has not won in 8 of their last 11 Premier League games (2 draws and 6 losses).
  • Both teams scored in 5 of Manchester City's last 6 league matches.
  • The number "2" appeared in the final scoreline in seven of the Citizens' last away Premier League matches.

Brentford vs. Manchester City: Match Prediction

The Londoners were recently the best team in the Premier League at home. However, in the last two home games, they lost to Nottingham Forest and Arsenal, surrendering their lead in this category to Liverpool. Nonetheless, Brentford remains the top team in terms of goals scored at home in the current championship, and I expect them to score against the Citizens. There is a possibility that the hosts will score more than once, as they have done in 8 of their last 11 home Premier League games.

Despite Manchester City's victories in the last two rounds, I remain skeptical about the Citizens' return to the race for high positions in the Premier League. The team has only managed to beat opponents from the lower half of the table. Manchester City's defense is far from ideal, having conceded in 8 of their last 9 away Premier League matches, and in 5 of the last 6 games, they have conceded at least two goals.

Nevertheless, the Citizens are unlikely to be left without scoring, as they have scored in 20 of their last 21 away Premier League matches. Erling Haaland has also returned to scoring form, netting three goals in the last two league matches.

My prediction – Both teams to score and Total over 2.5 goals

Betting tips 14 Jan 2025

Even with a squad half-filled with their youthful talent, Manchester City left no doubt against a League Two side in the FA Cup, while Brentford virtually fielded their strongest lineup but suffered a loss against a Championship underdog. How can they measure up to the champions?

In reality, against Plymouth Argyle (0:1), only goalkeeper Mark Flekken, left-back Keane Lewis-Potter, centre-back Nathan Collins, and forwards Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa were initially rested, with the latter pair eventually appearing. It’s one thing if they had taken 30 shots and faced sheer misfortune, but that wasn’t the case. They managed just nine attempts, with the opposing keeper barely tested — requiring only two saves. Until late December, Brentford were unbeaten at home (7-1-0), but counting the cup, this marks their third consecutive home defeat.

Manchester City, meanwhile, have finally shaken off their winless streak. They are now on a run of three consecutive victories, with an aggregate score of 14:1. Erling Haaland has rediscovered his goal-scoring touch (three goals in the last two rounds). In fact, even Jack Grealish has found the net, though it was a penalty, breaking a year-long drought. Despite any potential defensive issues, Manchester City's attack is formidable.

Currently, Brentford are facing a creative crisis. If it isn’t against Premier League strugglers like Southampton (5:0), they struggle to score, netting just three goals across five matches against Premier League sides. However, with a combination like Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, the hosts can likely score against the not-so-perfect Manchester City defence, but conceding will come easily to them. Hence, the visitors will not lose.
